Final Photos

My final is a timeline of ice going from a solid block of ice to it breaking up and melting over time and as its melting, making different forms. In each photo I am concentrating on having a little bit of water under the ice to make it obvious to the viewer that its ice that's melting. The lighting which was just one light shining direct onto the ice also helps show that it's melting by making the ice look more reflective. The theme of time and change comes across strong with the photos melting which is reinforced by the different range of shapes being made as it melts. There is a natural and made made feel with the photos where the melting is very natural but the the shapes as it is melting is very man made because the ice left on its own would not melt down like how I have shown, this helped strengthen my sculpture twist to my idea.

This was my first attempt at my new modified idea of ice making shapes as it melts over time like ice sculpture. I tried putting a little bit of colour in the ice which came out in an effective because it highlighted parts of the ice and looked good the only downfall to this is that I cant control where the little bit of colour will set so its risky where I will be having the colour where the ice will get more attention. The shapes came out in a way that I was going for with a variety of different shapes which I made while the ice was melting by putting together the different bits of ice in a variety of different ways. So far I am liking the progress and think that it ties together nicely with the time concept with the elements of ice melting and going to water over time and also with different shapes forming over time which occurs with mos things in the world.

 The set I used for this is on a varnished concrete table at my house with a black back drop. The varnished concrete works well because it provides a reflection with helps to show more detail on the ice and makes it easier to see water for some shots. I made sure I had a black backdrop to let all the focus be on the subject and It was a good solution with correct lighting to make the ice as visible as possible.

Development.

After doing my photo shoots of ice melting as its being kicked across the ground I found that I wasn't capturing everything I wanted and I have decided to try take my idea another step further and on top of looking at ice melting over time and disappearing; I want to investigate how ice makes different forms like with ice sculptures but with my idea I will be just showing how the ice takes on different forms through time as it is melting. One example and inspiration I have is photographer Patrick Endres. I like the way he uses light to show the ice sculptures in a unique way with light.

Stop motion attempt.

Based on a precedent of someone that videoed himslef kicking a block of ice which I am of yet to find. At first I found it hard to photograph the ice because it was hard to see it so I did some more tests and used food colouring but that didnt seem to work either because the colouring for some reason would not freeze so i tried it anyway, I found that evan though I could see the ice welll enough I wasnt getting the impression that as the ice was moving forward that is was slowly metlting towards the end.

However after experimenting differant ways that I could photograph the ice in the best way I could I realised thatth shapes that were formed and gave me an idea to make a slight alteration to my project and look at how ice changes shape as it melts relating to ice scultping.

This was my second photoshoot and also second approach to my project by taking photos by themselves and not making a time lapse. I am mostly concentrating with the ice melting into water at this stage aswel and after comparing I like the outcome of the still photos more than the stop motion mainly because you can see a detailed frozen moment of the ice transforming into water which is mainly illistated with the first picture.

Photoshoot 1: experimentation

This is my first photoshoot with trying out a time lapse of ice in a bowl of hot water melting over time. This is to help me give an idea to decide whether i should go into a time lapse direction or just still photo direction.

Proposal: Time

My idea for the second project is to focus on how elements change over a duration of time and I am going to be doing this on the transition of ice turning into water and then water turning into steam from the effects of heat. I am not sure yet whether a time lapse would be more effective or just still images illustrating the key changes of the transformations.
