Refelction.

I found at first this subject very hard to shoot but through my photo-shoots and trial and error I slowly understood how to take photos that show space in a small place. a big challenge for me was to not get too repetitive with my photos which at the start I felt I was doing and sometimes concentrating more on an object than the actual space within. Another problem I faced was focusing the camera on to get the right depth of field. this normally wouldn't be a problem but because I had specific focus for my shots and I couldn't look through my camera lens for a lot of my photos. (even some of my finals) I had to set my focus take the picture then check and change it. Overall I'm pretty happy of the outcome and the un-expected fence that I found which helped me a lot. I think out of this project I am starting to get a better understanding on using an SLR on full manual setting (which I'm liking a lot more than auto) and just getting better control and understanding with taking purposeful photos in general.

Final Photoshoot: Project 1.

This is the first photo in my final series. Its to make it look like a point of view from something that is living in the tall grass and that is at the entrance of its little home in the ground etc.

 This continues the narrative and starts to show the space in its surrounding, making it look very large and spacious even though this was a very small and inclosed space. This is also where I started to use a bit of depth of field to give a better understanding on the amount of room there is. to do this in this shot I was focusing on the background more than the foreground.

 This is where you start to get a wider view on the surrounding in the long grass. you start to see the old fence thats the structure for this grass shelter. It's starting to introduce nature with man made objects as well.

 This shot is an even more zoomed out shot where I am mostly focusing on the foreground because the bits of grass that have the main focus has semi resemblance of a tent to show resemblance with man made objects and nature. It doesn't dominate the photo just noticeable, another subtle thing i framed in this is the wires from the fence in the top right hand corner to slowly introduce this for the last image.

Final and most favorite Photo. It is the most zoomed out photo and shows a lot a bout the prior photos and gives you a better understanding on what the surrounding space is like. With this photo I put together some of the main aspects I had in previous photos for example showing the space from the view of something that lived here being right inside the grass. At this stage I'm not being as subtle with the old fence and wire that is part of this structure and in my own opinion I think from the perspective if the shot it has a feel to it that its showing off how big this place is, how nice it is with how vibrant and green it is and also with its abstract architectural feel with the wire as the roof and the wooden fence as the walls. With the contrast of this photo I was focusing on the shadows made by the over towering grass and the wooden fence which makes quite a bit of contrast to the much brighter background of the photo. In relation to the composition my main thing inline was to have the wooden fence come from an angle down from the top right corner to show a good depth of field and run your eyes along it to make you concertrate on the space from the foreground to the background.

 I liked this photo a lot mainly because how the background is blurred with the lens but still capturing a bit of sharpness which helps in creating a good depth of field. the reasons I didn't end up using this photo in my final is because I felt it lacked enough relevance to my other photos and that I'm not sure how effective the blur was too overwhelming.

I'm happy I with my last photoshoot and quite sure I have the photos I need now to make up my final images. In this photoshoot I was trying a few new things such as photographing in the "golden zone" just before sunset, the only problem being they didn't fit too well with my other photos I'm considering for my finals. One photo that I think was very successful was the top photo because it shows a very low perspective of being in the grass with even being underneath the abandoned fence. I can see myself using this as one of my finals.

Photoshoot 3

 I wanted this to look like someone or something looking out of a "grass cave" essentially to get a POV feel. at first I experimented with this by wrapping grass around the lense to make it a kind of tunnel of grass to show the entrance but I couldn't seem to get it right doing it that way so in the end I ended up using the sleeves in my sweatshirt and I think It worked quite effectively apart from having to pre set the manual focus before putting it in my sleeve because I couldn't change it while it was in there.

I think I made a bit of a breakthrough here with finding an old fence wrapped in wire stuck in the long grass and with the long grass growing around it, it has creative the exact type of space I need for what I want to show with my photos. I'm heading more towards a  narrative of showing maybe a bug or something that lives in the long grasses point of the view and emerging from the dark parts of the grass to show how vast it can look too the creatures living in and around the long grass. I feel that I'm pretty close to my final images but I'm still planning on doing one more small photoshoot.

Edited Proposal.

Project 1: Space

After my first two photoshoots I have decided to edit my proposal because through the past photoshoots I know what I'm aiming to do for my proposal and what I'm not going to do. 

My proposal is to investigate the space between long grass I want to show the narrative of something living in the long grass, my aim is to show from this point of view the amount of space there is in long grass that most of the time is disregarded so in a sense making a relatively small space look big. also added to this is the similarities in the space in human architecture in the long grass which I plan to achieve by making my own sort of grass igloo of the sort considering I have been unsuccessful so far with not interfering with the long grass. 

DSDN 144 Mini world

This is my mini world, I used my panorama picture for this. to make sure the sky matched up all I did was duplicate the image cut both images in half and then rotate the cut in half duplicate by 180 degrees and stick it on the other side of the original and this is what I got. Enjoy.

Inspiration, Macro grass

I really like this photo for a number of reasons, firstly it has an interesting view on the grass which I am also looking for as well as having a very specific focus on the photo. Also it shows a good use of the rule of thirds.

Second Shoot

 So far the closest I think of getting right in there showing the space in between the long grass. the next step is to find a way to get in even closer and experiment more with depth of field to use it in a more effective way.

 I thought this was a good idea getting a picture of the spider nest among the long grass but I don't think it is as effective as I would of liked considering its starting to go more towards object photography than I would like.

Im a lot more happier with this photo-shoot considering I am starting to get some more in depth shots of the tall grass close up. I still don't feel like I'm there yet though. I think I need to get even more into the grass and show it from a perspective maybe of a bug on the ground or just in such a way to illustrate how much space there actually is. My far away shots seem to be failing so I have decided to drop the idea of a far away shot entirely.

Photography First shoot

 

First photo-shoot went alright although I am finding it difficult to get a good depth of field with the long grass because I'm finding it hard to find a place in the long grass that I can use as a sort of grass cave, With the long distance shots I'm finding these less effective so I am thinking with my proposal to make more focus on the close up shots in the space of long grass rather than the long distance shots.

The space in which I am going to be exploring is long grass and or bush and I am communicating the concept of mystery feeling in long grass because there is more than meets the eye with it and it is something that is often overlooked. My photos will range from close up perspectives of the inside of long grass and bush as well as a faraway shot of the long grass and bush to give a narrative of the same object in different variations so show what the space of a patch of long grass looks like from the naked eye far away and then getting a move in-depth “true” idea of what the space inside and surrounding the area of a patch of long grass is like.

Pheay Rongs composes his photos really well and it gives me an idea on how to shoot long grass, I especially like the use of depth of field he uses in these photos.

Precedent two: Depth of field

I Think for my project 1 since I am dealting with the space surrounding and in tall grass that having a good understanding of depth of field will be important. Upon researching I came across Victor Geer who had good examples of depth of field and even an example of how he did it so effectively.

He used Tilt-shift photography which is a photographic technique that relies on the use of special lenses to simulate a shallow depth of field which makes real life objects appear as miniature models. The effect is achieved by tilting the lens relative to the photographed image to achieve a very shallow depth of field.
Tilt shift encompasses two different types of movements: rotation of the lens, called tilt, and movement of the lens parallel to the image plane, called shift. Tilt is used to control the orientation of the plane of focus to produce an image that appears sharp.while Shift is used to control the perspective. 

Precedent one: Gareth McConnell

I chose Gareth McConnell as one of my precedent photographers because he has a lot of his photos to do with nature which relates to my project and I like his use of depth in the picture above.
