CCDN 271 assignment 2

Abstract and Thesis Statement

A growing problem in today’s society is the amount of poverty around the world and the multitude of problems it brings with poverty. Where there is most of the world’s wealth in a percent as low as ten percent and the majority of the world’s population in poverty and some at the edge of starvation. With the technology of today’s age many designers will find that there are many more options available to solve the problems in third world countries.  With this project I aim to research the efforts of designers concentrating more on design for the other ninety percent (third world countries), helping with sustaining a better living condition to face the many problems for those in third world countries living in poverty. I will argue that designers of the world should be putting more of their attention to “design for the other ninety percent” as it will collectively help improve the living standards in third world undeveloped countries so they can live a life that everyone deserves. Beginning with Ilse Oosterlaken. (2009) Design for Development: A Capability Approach. Design Issues 25:4, 91-102, this will provide me with an overview of an analysis of the development of design for “the other ninety percent” and an idea on what should be done about this to start making a change for people living in third world countries. Another source that I will be studying is a video retrieved from TEDIndia (2009) which provides a good example of some of the serious problems that are faced in third world countries and what methods were used to help solve these problems.

Concpets

My first concept idea which I modeled too look a lot like eva with the curve where the neck is, floating head and with the legs I was going to have rocked booster legs so he could hover but I felt that that would over complicate the simple design I was going for and at this stage i'm not that familiar with fire dynamics.
With this design I modeled eyes how its like its on a screen, This concept has a raindrop body and more joints than the other concepts which would be make animating more flexible and provide more options but For this design I didn't like the over look of it and I thought it needed to be smoother or a lot more round all around.
With my final concept idea and the character I chose I liked how it was simple and clean and has a big enough face so I can show the different emotions with its complexity if i want to add detail I still can work with modeling the legs and arms to how I like.

Precedents for Assignment 2A

With Eva from the movie Wall-E I really like how the design of the character is simple but still looks really nice and still has a lot of personality with the character. This is the type of metal I am potentially looking at using for my final. With the picture of the two characters fighting over the banana, this is from a short movie called "Banana" with the little minions off despicable me in it. With this animation I like the story line of it how the problem occurs and what happens because of it and how it is done with the characters being quite childish.

Photoshoot 2 contact sheet

Photoshoot 2

This was my second photoshoot and also second approach to my project by taking photos by themselves and not making a time lapse. I am mostly concentrating with the ice melting into water at this stage aswel and after comparing I like the outcome of the still photos more than the stop motion mainly because you can see a detailed frozen moment of the ice transforming into water which is mainly illistated with the first picture.

Contact sheet: 1

Photoshoot 1: experimentation

This is my first photoshoot with trying out a time lapse of ice in a bowl of hot water melting over time. This is to help me give an idea to decide whether i should go into a time lapse direction or just still photo direction.

Proposal: Time

My idea for the second project is to focus on how elements change over a duration of time and I am going to be doing this on the transition of ice turning into water and then water turning into steam from the effects of heat. I am not sure yet whether a time lapse would be more effective or just still images illustrating the key changes of the transformations.

Reflection.

I like how my final animation ended up. even though my concept idea has changed though the progress of the project I'm happy in the changes I made and the direction I went in from a stone being hit by metal to this odd flubber object being hit by metal and out of retaliation eating/absorbing it and adding a bit of the attributes of the spiky metal ball to the flubber in the end result. With the sound it was really difficult to find things that matched what I wanted but the sounds I ended up with I quite like especially how the spiky ball is in intense slow motion and then hits the flubber in a not so intense way? If i could change anything it would probably be the camera and add more shots to see all sides of the ball and flubber. I found out in this project how annoying maya can be and to expect setbacks such as a whole day wasted trying to get my sky to come out in a batch render. All in all I'm happy with the outcome.

Poster.

With my poster I was aiming for simplicity and clear understanding to get across what each of the different pictures where in relation to my animation and what they meant.

Occlusion: added detail.

Even though my render of my project took 24hours I decided to make an occlusion render to make the detail and quality of the light better and more realistic, this render took about 18 hours which was less but it was rendering on 4 different computers. It didn't make as much of a difference as I had hoped but I'm still happy with it.

Timeline.

At (1) its a shot of just the spiky ball in the sky so you know its falling from the sky. the next frame (2) you know its fallen from the sky onto the flubber and you can see the reaction it is getting from being hit by a spiky ball. not sure if you can see this in (3) but the spiky ball is twisting and trying to get out of the flubber to escape because it knows its in trouble. Frame (4) it is going for the kill and is reacting by morphing upwards to absorb/eat the spiky ball. In (5) the spiky ball is fully covered and is trying to escape by extending its spikes to break through the fubber. At (6) is the spiky balls last attempted to escape giving it all its got but as you see in (7) it was no successful and is going back to its original form. Then at (8) you see that it is now starting to eat/absorb the ball and you start to see some changes happening to the flubber and that it is actually starting to change into the rusty metal of the spiky ball. in (9) you see the conclusion and result where it has gone back to its normal form with the exception that from absorbing the spiky ball it now has some spikes of its own and even though it is still flubber it is now the same rusty metal material of the spiky ball.

scene.

With my scene I didn't think that grass was the right thing to use to I have decided for my scene to be in a wasteland. This worked out well because it was a simple scene that I could make the same way I made the grass landscape and it worked well with my artificial sky. To make sure I didn't have an overly pixilated plain I uv unwrapped my plain I wanted to put my wasteland picture on and duplicated it over and over to spread over the whole UV map in Photoshop.
